Indian two-wheeler maker Bajaj Auto is planning to introduce electric vehicles in the country between the financial years 2019-2020. According to a company official, the development of Bajaj e-vehicles will take place across various segments.

Rakesh Sharma, Executive Director, Bajaj Auto said, “We are developing prototypes across the bay, however, what will come out first is a question we will be addressed shortly. But it should happen this year.”

The company recently came into an agreement with KTM to produce a common 48-volt electric two-wheeler platform in India, with a power range of 3 to 10kW. This production will begin at Bajaj’s production site in Pune by 2022.

A Bajaj’s official commented on this by saying, “We are quite keen on electric. It is an important development for the future and to prepare and learn from this development as it unfolds.”

This platform has been designed to support different product variants that include scooters, mopeds and small mopeds of both the brands in partnership.

This step can prove out to be beneficial for Bajaj electric vehicles as the government is expected to increase the sales of electric two and three wheelers in the coming three to five years.

Being the largest producer of three-wheelers in the Indian market, this step by Bajaj is beneficial for the company as well as the customers. The company might also get a boost to produce electric three-wheelers due to the company’s decision for doubling direct subsidy for electric three-wheelers to Rs 20,000 per kilowatt hour. The initiative to make them as affordable as those that run on fossil fuel will increase the sales of these vehicles in the country.
