Michelin along with General Motors on Tuesday disclosed a prototype of airless tyre for passenger vehicles. This tyre is expected to launch by 2024. Being a prototype of an airless tyre, it will remove the risk of tyre punctures and blowouts.

Michelin and General Motors will execute the research work in partnership. Both the companies have set a goal to introduce airless tyres on passenger vehicles by the year 2024. At a press conference, Michelin Group CEO Florent Menegaux said, "Uptis demonstrates that Michelin's vision for a future of sustainable mobility is clearly an achievable dream."

According to General Motors senior vice-president Steve Kiefer, airless tyre or Uptis (Unique Puncture-proof Tyre System), is an ideal futuristic tyre for the automotive industry. He further called it a great example of how the company’s customers benefit when brands like these collaborate and innovate with the supplier partners.

Michelin and General Motors are testing the airless tyre or Uptis on vehicles like the Chevrolet Bolt EV. Later this year, the companies will start the testing of Uptis in Michigan, on a test fleet of Bolt EV vehicles.

Uptis comes with improved architecture and composite materials, which lets the tyre to endure the car's weight at different speeds on road. This technology combines to remove compressed air to support the vehicle's load, and thus results in environmental savings.

Around 200 million tyres all around the world are dumped prematurely every year as a result of punctures, damage from road hazards or improper air pressure that causes uneven wear. After the introduction of airless tyres, the possibility of punctures and blowouts will be eliminated and so the wastage of tyres will be reduced.
